How do I care for my hairless cat?

What are common household hazards for kittens?

You may be one of those few who have adopted a sphynx, don sphynx, or a related breed. Not all of them are completely bald. Some may have normal or light hair on the head, on paws, or on the tip of their tails. They may even lose hair by the time they’re 2-3 years of age.

These breeds have their own peculiarities and this is what you must take care of:

1. Intolerance to cold

  • A short walk outdoors will make her instantly feel cold. It’s recommended that bald cats stay indoors.
  • The lack of fur also leads to great loss of heat from the body surface. Their energy needs are also higher.
  • Do not limit their diet - food should always be freely available and in sufficient quantity. At the same time, of course, do not just give a week's supply of food, it is better to pour the bowl several times a day.

2. Sensitivity to drafts and heat

  • Hairless cats are more susceptible to drafts and overheating. They like to sit on hot surfaces - which may lead to thermal burns. Do not allow direct contact with heating devices.
  • Sunlight may cause sunburns. Use recommended sunscreen lotions as a precaution. Injuries and skin diseases often form dark spots
  • For trips to the veterinarian or travel, especially during the cold season, it is better to use a blanket or overalls.

3. Need for frequent bathing

  • These breeds require regular bathing – as frequent as once a week. Get your cat accustomed to baths from a young age.
  • Frequent bathing will also help avoid blackheads along the skin. Use a specially manufactured cat shampoo.

In case you need more reassurance or think her skin is abnormal, contact your vet.
